Grilling Product Review: Bacon Body Wash by Archie McPhee!

Need even more Bacon in your life? Here’s a unique way.

On a consistent basis the team here at GrillJunkie™ sets time aside to communicate our formal opinion on either a Grilling, BBQ or Burger related product or event such as a BBQ Pitmaster contest, a chili cook-off or a tailgating event. As you certainly can imagine, and most likely have experienced yourself, these products and events run the gamut from Gotta Have It!, Cool, Useful, Utilitarian, Ridiculous and the, well, Just Plain Asinine! This week’s candidate is Archie McPhee’s Bacon Body Wash.

In addition to a formal written review, we also assign a visual indication of our opinion to every product, as depicted through our Grilling Product Review (GPR) scale:

Bacon, Bacon, Bacon! I Need More Bacon!

Ask any normal human being what their Top 3 Favorite choice of meat is and 9 times out of 10 bacon will be on that list. The 10% that do not list bacon among their top 3 are either strict vegans, self-deceiving vegetarians, or are just plain lying. In fact, if you first seeded the survey by asking the question, “Would you consider bacon as one of your top three food choices?”, the percentage will significantly increase closer to 100%.

Bacon, Can it be good for our bodies?

Bacon, It does a body good?

The undeniable fact is that we are obsessed with bacon. Who can resist the aroma, sounds and taste of irresistibly delicious bacon? It’s a bacon celebration! Bacon is not only used as a popular food topping on, in, and around hamburgers and sandwiches, but it also used in soups, salads, as well as brownies, ice cream and s’mores.

Some folks are so obsessed with bacon that they’ve created their own trademarked recipes that would give any cardiologist a heart-attack just knowing that it exists! The most famous of this obsession is The Bacon Explosion™ from the gang over at BBQ Addicts, The Bacon Explosion™, an American-football sized pork dish that consists of bacon wrapped around a filling of spiced sausage and crumbled bacon. has become and continues to be so popular that the original blog post introducing this bacon beast quickly went absolutely hog-wild viral on the internet.

BBQ Addicts' Bacon Explosion - pure ecstasy.

BBQ Addicts’ Bacon Explosion – pure ecstasy.

So, with the combination of these facts and our obsessive and expressive behavior celebrating our passion for bacon, you would assume that we would be completely satiated at some point and things would begin to level out until the next big craze. Well, think again! All-mighty bacon has crossed the culinary parallel into non-food territory leveraging one of it’s biggest strengths; that incredible, irresistible and unmistakable aroma.  Enter the realm of Bacon Body Wash.

Bacon, It Does a Body Good – Archie McPhee’s Bacon Body Wash

Before we proceed, it is important to note that our reviews typically follow an organized and comprehensive structure which includes: a Problem that needs to be solved or addressed, the product’s Solution to that problem, followed by the Good, the Bad and the infrequent Ugly elements of the product or service. Finally we provide a Verdict along with an official GrillJunkie GPR (Grilling Product Rating). So let’s dig in to McPhee’s Bacon Body Wash.

Official Product Review and GPR

  •  Problem – It is very simple. We need more bacon in this world! Please, please, please give us more bacon, and if possible can we get some bacon before we have our bacon for breakfast in the morning?
  • Product’s Solution Pitch – The product addresses the problem directly by stating that you get your daily bacon fix and you can “Smell bacon fresh.”  The product is pitched as a bottle of “clear, meaty liquid soap” created so you can smell like a delicious slice of bacon after every bath or shower.

Specifically, the product description reads,“Before this fantastic product, when you wanted to shower with liquid bacon, your best bet would be to take a vat of bacon drippings into the shower with you and use it to moisturize. This resulted in glowing, shiny skin and clogged drains. This Bacon Body Wash brings the exhilarating aroma of bacon to yet another part of your morning routine. The friendly Mr. Bacon on the label wants you to smell like he does.”

  • The Good – The product has 5 positive attributes. First, it smells like bacon. Secondly, the product addresses customers’ bacon-cravings while not contributing to high cholesterol or coronary disease. Third, it helps to keep you clean and may even create an added incentive to take a shower on a lazy Sunday after watching football. Fourth, the product is attractively priced, packaged and promoted to target price conscience bacon-lovers. Lastly, and again, it smells like irresistible bacon. OK, technically only 4 attributes but because it’s bacon we got a little light-headed.

Bacon: It Does a Body Good! Archie McPhee's Bacon Body Wash

Bacon: It Does a Body Good! Archie McPhee’s Bacon Body Wash

  • The Bad – There are 3 negative attributes to this product. First, it unfortunately cannot be eaten. No, not even as a creamy bacon topping on that already bacon wrapped, stuffed bacon cheeseburger! Believe us, we already thought about, were tempted, and reluctantly came to grips with reality. Secondly, they obviously thought this whole bacon thing through because when you are done eating some bacon-enhanced concoction, you can immediately clean your teeth with their bacon toothpicks followed by a good cleaning with bacon toothpaste and floss! Why is this bad? It is obviously designed as an up-sell package and could get expensive if you’re not careful. Let’s face it, in order to keep up with the Smith’s next door you have to get at least one, if not all of the other bacon products. Third, the product is only available on-line. What a convenience it would be to be able to pick up your maple smoked bacon and Bacon Body Wash at your local grocer while picking up a few other less significant items.
  • The Ugly – This has to be mentioned. Although we believe that the packaging on this product is attractive, complete with a full sized Mr. Bacon guy peaking out behind a shower curtain to greet you, wouldn’t it be cool if the bottle was shaped more like an older style shampoo bottle, the ones that were perfectly round, like a bacon-flavored salami stick, with a lard colored cap on the top! Oh well, just a suggestion from a former product manager. Dare to dream.

Additionally, the product has an inherent side effect. Yes, you will smell like bacon that most likely will attract the opposite sex if they are indeed a bacon lover themselves. However be prepared that you will unintentionally attract the same sex, but don’t be too concerned, it’s most likely the bacon and not you. Oh, and be prepared for dogs chasing you everywhere in a wild apocalyptic frenzy…lots and lots of dogs!

  • Verdict – We give the Bacon Body Wash 4 out of 5 GrillJunkie™ GPR Firepots, which equates to a Hot! product but not quite Searing!! This product addresses and solves the problem for which it was designed. The idea is very unique and the McPhee product line meets its cult-like following by offering weird but useful products. The price is right and meets 3 customer needs in a very unique niche, namely: strange, cleanliness and bacon-satisfaction.

GrillJunkie GPR Four FirePot ratingIf the product were a new infrared grill, or a new digital gadget designed to check the internal temperature of a steak, then we would have been more critical and detailed in our research and approach. But c’mon, it’s bacon! Beyond that, it’s Bacon Body Wash. If Tom Cruise were on the GrillJunkie™ team, it would have been a very short yet succinct Product Review, “You had me at bacon!”

Grilled Garlic Recipe – Ain’t Nothing Like It!

Grilled Garlic and Grilled Garlic Bread Recipe

Ain't nothing quite like the aroma and taste of grilled garlic.

There’s nothing quite like the aroma and taste of grilled garlic.

Over the years, the team here at GrillJunkie™ has experimented and perfected our grilled garlic recipe and technique. There is nothing comparable to the fun and aroma of roasting garlic whole. Be the Grill master while enjoying the hearty, earthy, warm and toasty cloves right out of the head, or squeezing the softened and roasted garlic cloves right out of their sleeves. Why use your boring indoor oven when you can grill the garlic on your tried and trusted grill? We don’t need no stinkin’ ovens!

Below you will find a 2 for 1 recipe! Grilled Garlic of course, but then we take that luscious, grilled and roasted garlic and spread it on some nicely sliced French or Italian bread and then get those back on the grill to create Garlic Bread grill-style. How incredibly simple! And perfect for garlic lovers. Get your long-handled grilling tongs out as they will be put to good use on this grilling experience.

Grilled Garlic

  • 2 heads of garlic
  • 4 teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • fine or medium grind sea salt and freshly ground peppercorns

  1. Fire up the grill and preheat to medium/high heat to about 400 degrees F.

Cut the top of the garlic cloves and drench with olive oil.

Expose the top of each garlic clove and drench the whole bulb with olive oil.

  2. Peel away the outer layers of the garlic bulb skin, leaving the skins of the individual cloves intact.
  3. Using a sharp knife, cut off 1/4 to a 1/2 inch of the top of the cloves, exposing the inside tops of the individual cloves of garlic.
  4. Place the garlic heads on a sheet of aluminum foil, cut side up. Drizzle a couple teaspoons of olive oil over each head, using your fingers to make sure the garlic head is well coated. Sprinkle each bulb with a a pinch of salt and pepper to your liking.
  5. Wrap each garlic bulb with aluminum foil, leaving a little air space on the top between the garlic heads and aluminum foil. Place on the grill grates and grill the garlic heads at 400°F for 30-35 minutes, or until the cloves look caramelized and feel soft when pressed.
  6. With your tongs, remove the garlic heads from the grill and allow them to cool enough so you can touch them without burning yourself. Using a small sharp knife, cut the skin slightly around each clove. Use a cocktail fork or your fingers to pull or squeeze the roasted garlic cloves out of their skins and onto a clean plate.
  7. Eat as is (there is nothing quite like freshly roasted garlic) or mash with a fork and use in dishes such as on steak, sauces, pesto or in pasta. The roasted garlic can be spread over warm French bread, mixed with sour cream for a topping for baked potatoes, or mixed in with Parmesan and pasta.

Grilled Garlic Bread

  • 6 cloves roasted garlic
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • Salt and freshly ground peppercorns
  • 8 slices Italian or French bread, sliced 1/4-inch thick on an angle
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
  • 1 tablespoons freshly chopped sweet basil
  • 2 tablespoons of freshly grated Parmesano – Reggiano cheese (optional, but c’mon you know you want to!)

  1. Fire up and Preheat your grill to Medium/High heat or to about 400 degrees F. Make sure the grates are clean and all residue from previous meals is either burned away or scraped clean. Oil the grill grates with an oil soaked paper towel held with a pair of tongs.

  2. Combine the garlic and butter in a small bowl and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Spread 1 tablespoon of the garlic butter on one side of each slice of bread. Grill butter-side down until lightly golden with nice grill marks.
  4. Turn each slice over, sprinkle the already grilled sides with parsley and basil and grill an additional 20 seconds or until they begin to turn a golden toasty brown and have nice grill marks.
  5. Carefully remove the slices of grilled garlic bread and place on a large serving dish. Lightly sprinkle each slice of grilled garlic bread with some grated Parmesano – Reggiano cheese.
Delicious grilled garlic bread. Easy!

Grilled Steak Sauce Recipe – Sorry Texas!

Steak Sauce Recipe That Even Texas Purists Would Love

Texans have a unique opinion on steak sauce.

Texans have a strong opinion on steak sauce.

WARNING: This blog post could get us in hot water with most Texans, as serving steak sauce with steak is not only against the Texas State Constitution, but it could get someone jailed, or worse! You see, as one of our GrillJunkie™ founders explains,

“Steak, in Texas, is served with nothing but salt and pepper, a.k.a. S and P.  And it is only grilled long enough to make it appear cooked, rather than rare. We Texans take our steak VERY SERIOUSLY, in steak-land.  Tell someone you ate your steak with steak sauce and you’re in danger.  It’s just not done that way in Texas.”

There's nothing like homemade steak sauce.

Ain’t nothing like homemade steak sauce.

With utmost respect to all Texans, we have 3 excuses to continue writing and share our steak sauce recipe!

1. We love steak sauce.

2. Four of us were raised in New Mexico.  And old habits die hard.

3. It’s fun and easy to make…and delicious!

This Homemade Steak Sauce is heartier and sweeter than the acidic steak sauces that come in the bottles from the grocery store.  And we like it that way.  It’s thick and hearty, and it’s the perfect companion for a nice, medium-rare hunk of irresistible meat.  But, don’t take our word for it.  Make some for yourself!  It’s easy to make and is ready in mere minutes!

Homemade Steak Sauce

  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. molasses
  • 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp. garlic salt
  • 1 tsp. onion powder
  • 8 shakes of hot sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Homemade steak sauce complements a nicely grilled steak.

Homemade steak sauce complements a finely grilled steak.

Whisk all ingredients together in a small bowl until well-combined. Allow flavors to meld for at least an hour before serving. The sauce can be used as a dipping sauce or can be poured over the steak! Some may even be tempted to drink it.

Storage: This Homemade Steak Sauce can be stored in the refrigerator in a sealed jar for up to a month. But believe us…it won’t last a month. This Homemade Steak Sauce is worth going against the accepted “law” of steak-land. You’ll throw the steak purists out of your way to get to this simple sauce! Just be respectful. We’re all Americans and we’re all in this together.

Creamy Topless Bacon Wino Burger Recipe Grilling a Burger

The Topless Wino Burger – Creamed and Baconized!

What the Bacon Wino grilled burger does to you!

What the Bacon Wino grilled burger does to you!

Served stacked on the bottom bun only, this burger combines the complementary flavors of ground peppercorns, wine, Dijon mustard, tarragon and cream onto a burger that will knock them out and keep them addicted for life! Grilling a burger is awesome!

  • 1 & 1/2 pounds ground chuck – 80% lean
  • 1/3 cup Red wine
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Green peppercorns
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon or
  • 1 teaspoon dried tarragon
  • 1/3 cup Whipping cream

  • 1/2 teaspoon sea or kosher salt
  • 1/2 freshly ground black peppercorns
  • 1/4 cup of canola or light olive oil
  • 4 Hamburger buns or Kaiser roll bottoms

1. In a sauce pan, combine red wine and mustard and place over medium heat on a stove or your grill’s side burner if available.

Remove from the heat and add fresh tarragon.

4. In a large bowl, gently divide the meat into four equal portions. Each patty should consist of approximately 6 ounces of ground meat.

5. Carefully and loosely form each divided portion into a patty that is ¾ – 1 inch thick and about 4 & ½ inches in diameter, again being careful to not overwork the meat. Make a shallow depression in the center of each of the meat patties with your thumb. This helps to keep the burger from bulging up in the middle while grilling which causes a round burger and inconsistent cooking temperature throughout.  Plus, it’s kinda cool to do! 6. Once formed, place patties on a clean plate, sprinkle both sides with salt and gently press the black peppercorn into the meat, cover and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes.

The burgers, they are a grilling! Nothing quite like the sound and aroma of grilling a burger!

7. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat and coat grill grates with cooking oil so as to avoid patties from sticking. Remove patties from refrigeration, brush the burgers with light olive or canola oil, and place the patties on the hot grill grates. Ah, the joy of grilling a burger! Grill and sear patties over medium-high heat for 4‐5 minutes per side, or to desired doneness being sure they are cooked through and have reached an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Remove grilled patties from grill and let them rest for 2‐3 minutes.

8. To assemble and stack, arrange burgers on toasted bun bottoms, place 2 bacon slices on each patty and generously spoon some of the wine/mustard sauce over the top. If desired, (or a bit modest), top with upper bun.
